Over 5,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period, people in the region dug over 400 shafts to access high-quality, jet-black flint. This flint was used for making tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects. The mines cover an area of approximately 37 hectares and extend up to 13 meters deep into the ground.
